Whats the cheapest you ever had to sell a shopped out and working pinfor and what was it ?

So here I am carrying this Sky Lab thru the snow around to the walkout
and I'm thinking to myself " this is nuts that I'm now having to tear
this game down in the freezing garage and haul it into the basement
and set it back up again.....blah, blah, blah.......all for a game
thats shopped and working and I cant even get $325 for it ". This is
crazy !!! Are the times worse off now then ever ? What was the
cheapest working and shopped out game you ever had to sell and for how
much, and why do you think it was so hard to sell ?

On a side note, of all the games that I was selling out of the garage
the last two months, the ones that I thought wouldn't last a week are
still here and the ones I thought would never sell went first like hot
cakes. I dont get it ?

Times aren't worse now, they are just changing. EMs are a dying breed
as far as people collecting them, and their pricing is starting to
reflect that. Same goes with a lot of the early Solid State Stuff.
Most people I know collect later Solid States, and some are DMD
collectors only. Don't get me wrong, there are always exceptions to
the rules (desireable EMs/SS that stand the tests of time), but for
the most part, if it isn't a decent later SS/DMD game, it isn't going
to sell for much.

I am just getting into the EMs (have had tons of DMDs through the
years), and I love that the most expensive EM I have purchased so far
has been 200 bucks... Can't beat that...

Took me almost 2 years to sell a Williams Darling that was
completely shopped and working. Finally got about $400 for it
on eBay - a Christmas gift for a guy from his wife. She
was looking for a simple game that he would enjoy tinkering
with.

If you aren't going to get that much for it why not keep it and enjoy it
for yourself and friends and family?

Didn't have to sell it (in retrospect should have held onto it). A
completely shopped and tweaked meteor, for $225. I did pull the mpu
board from it but all the guy did was swap one in and he had a 100%
working ready to play game.

Should have held onto it for a "show mule". Instead I have a couple
other machines instead for that purpose - light, easy to setup and break
down, work great. (They are duplicates of the keeper ones in my collection)

Re: Whats the cheapest you ever had to sell a shopped out and workingpin for and what was it ?

A WMS Lady Luck for $225 or $250. I needed space. It sold cheap,
because cosmetically, it was a train wreck all the way around.
Although it was rock solid mechanically. Gameplay wise, it's a great
game. If it was nicer cosmetically, I would have kept it.

FWIW, any of the messenger ball games are a tough sell, (Sky Lab /
Space Lab, Darling / Jubilee, Whoopee, Flying Circus, Sunset). There
just isn't much to do on them.

Re: Whats the cheapest you ever had to sell a shopped out and workingpin for and what was it ?

Williams Firepower.

Paid $100 for it sight unseen and non working, playfield worn down to
the wood. Did a complete playfield swap, tumbled parts, cleaned
plastics and posts, rebuilt/repaired all the boards, rebuilt all the
mechs including flippers, repinned connectors, 40-way interconnect, new
rubbers, #47 bulbs - blah blah blah.

Worked and looked like it did in 1980 when new. Sold it on eBay for
$350 to someone as their first pin. Once listed, I just let the auction
run to the end. But no one came forward to bid what I thought it was
actually worth.

Downside - Feel like I lost money on the deal, as it took hours of my
time and I spent money for the new parts it needed.
Upside - I saved a pin I love from the scrapheap and probably gave
someone a game would last for a while.

These days I wouldn't do a playfield swap and complete rebuild on a game
I wan't planning to keep.

Bally Blackjack - reconditioned - $350.
This time of year, supply is usually
larger than demand for the average game,
particularly one in average shape.
IMO, the only games presently
existing with demand exceeding supply are
DMD games, and pre-'57 woodrails, so
they're going to be easiest to sell and valued
the highest.
