I bought some EL wire to put on my TZ. Some time back I think I
remember someone saying you could clip it to the desired length, is
this true?

Well yes, kind of. It depends on how much you're cutting off.

Each power driver is designed for a specific length of EL wire. The
more you cut off, the brighter the EL wire will get. The brighter you
drive your EL wire, the shorter its lifespan. And yes, EL wire will get
dimmer with usage.
