Well I have a ghost in my IJ. It randomly ejects two balls from the
idol when only one should come out. The machine then becomes confused
and ends the ball when one of the two drains. It then continues to
spit out two balls in the launcher. I'm guessing that it believes
that only one ball came out of the idol and the other should be
there. The only other clue is that the idol only releases two balls
when multiball starts. After a quick moaning and groanin under the
idol it will spin the idol and eject the last ball. Before anyone
says my trough optos are bad. I have a great lakes retro board that I
checked with the digital camera and is working 100%. I have replaced
all of the opts in the idol and the switch on the ramp out of the
idol. Yet the problem still persists. I was hoping that someone on
the board has faced this same gremlin. The worst problem is that it
only occurs occasionally and is hard to diagnose.

Hi,
Check to see if the plunger is mushroomed, for the idol trapdoor, if
it is it can stay down and let two balls out like you described.
Obviously the whole mechanism, too, but those plungers I've seen
mushroomed on several Indys.
You can often replicate the fault in coil test.
Filing a chamfer on the ends is enough.

Sorry, but my money is on the optos in the idol. For some reason they
are not seeing the ball (dirty perhaps?) Also the ball launcher
shooting out two balls at the start of any ball is a separate problem
within itself. No matter what the digital camera shows I would still
check those optos in the main trough in test. Lastly, it never hurts
to check that gosh forsaken diode/switch on the POA just above the
mode start as if it gets smashed it causes all sorts of trouble

Also test and/or replace your trough opto boards. Mine were toast and
the game will not play right with flakey optos.
