New Nvidia driver 175.16 and fsx + Vista 32 not working!

I installed the new nvidia drivers for Vista 32bit version 175.16. Starting
fsx and got the menu.
selecting any flight and clicking "Fly now'" and the computer freezes and I
got a totally black
screen.

Put back the previous drivers , version 169.25 and every thing works fine
again.
Any idea ?

That is certainly strange, they should work just fine.

Only things that come to mind initially:

Did you remove the 169.25 drivers prior to installing, reboot, then install
the new 175.16 drivers?

Is your direct x runtime up to date?

Do you have SP1 for Vista installed?

Is it only FSX, or does it do the same in any 3d app?

Did you make sure your monitor resolution was set appropriately after
installing the new drivers?

Perhaps a corrupted download of the drivers, might try deleting the download
and downloading again.

None of the above may have anything to do with it, just some things you
might want to check.

Re: New Nvidia driver 175.16 and fsx + Vista 32 not working!

Hi Don ,

Thanks for your reaction.

As always , I did not uninstall the drivers ,just install the new one. Is
that incorrect?

I have directx 10 default from Vista home premium. Installed SP1
I do not have or use other 3d except the demo from nvidia "Cascades" , which
i did not try.
My videocard is the 8800GTX and I did not change the resolution either did
the installing
of the 175.16 drivers.

The same version of drivers , 175,16 , for XP and FS2004 gives no problem !

Re: New Nvidia driver 175.16 and fsx + Vista 32 not working!

Try uninstalling the 169.25 drivers first, you will be prompted to reboot,
when you reboot it will come up looking all weird due to it using a basic
display driver.
If it tells you it found new hardware and offers to find a driver, select
cancel, do not let windows search for , or try to install a new driver
automatically.

Then install the new 175.16 drivers, you will be prompted to reboot again,
after rebooting your display should come up looking more normal, then go
into your video card's settings, by right clicking on desktop and clicking
on " nvidia control panel ", verify your monitor's resolution is where it
should be, along with your 3d settings such as aa, as, etc.

Then, try FSX again and see what happens. If it does it again, try that
other 3d app you have, and see if it does it as well.

Btw, do you have FSX updated through SP2?

PS:

Yes, you should always remove the current video card display drivers, before
installing the new ones. Some even go so far, as to use a driver cleaner to
get rid of all remaining remnants in the registry after the uninstall,
usually that is not necessary unless you run into an issue that you can't
resolve otherwise, but uninstalling the old drivers is always the preferred
and recommended method by Nvidia. While you might can get away with not
doing so, eventually it may come back to bite you, having those entries left
in there from the old drivers, as some may not get overwritten by the new
ones.

Thanks Don , I'll give it a try. I will let you know if uninstalling the
drivers
will help or not.

Re: New Nvidia driver 175.16 and fsx + Vista 32 not working!

Hi Don ,

I did what you suggested. A lot of reboots Unfortunally no results.
Nvidia-"Cascades" works fine with 175.16 but Fsx does not. I have
uninstalled 175.16 and installed 169.25 again.Fsx is working fine with
this version so I will stick to this and wait for version >= 175.17
Thanks anyway !

Re: New Nvidia driver 175.16 and fsx + Vista 32 not working!

Very strange,

Are you running SP2 in FSX? Just curious. Not saying that would fix it if
not, just wondering why it would be doing that to you.

I have just installed the new WHQL driver in XP and got the EXACT
same.
I think the Beta version worked before it (haven't been using FSX much
lately)

It took forever for the terrain etc to load then nothing, just black
and no way of exiting back to the desktop or Task Manager
I will test another aircraft and area in a minute

Got more problems in different location and a default aircraft. Seems
to be more prone to black screening if the FSX profile is modified
with AA and AF settings etc. Tried the BETA and same thing (I think I
was running it recently without profile changed). I have gone back to
174.74 until I get to the bottom of it
