Help with Hollywood Heat

I recently purchased a Hollywood Heat and it works except for a couple
of things and since this is my first pin, I was wondering if I could
get some help.

First, are there playfield lights that stay on constantly, because I
have seen several bulbs under plastics and none work. All the flashing
lights seem to work (other than a few that seem tempermental.) I have
replaced just about every #44 bulb with brand new #47 blubs. Any
suggestions?

Second, every once awhile the music dies or gets stuck on one note.
Anything I should be looking for?

I also have a set of drop targets that stay locked in the up position
when the power is turned on and will not drop or score.

I anyone out there could help I would be very grateful. I bought this
machine because I am a big Miami Vice Fan.

Thanks and Happy New Year

Congrats on your first pin!

Specifically, which lights on the PF stay on constantly? The general
illumination bulbs should always be on, and the lamps controlled by the
chaser board should always be "flashing" on in sequence. These lamps
include the inserts in the lane below the Hot Shot ramp, and the inserts
leading up to the main red ramp. If other lamps are locked on, this
could be due to bad ground connections, bad connections at the driver
board, bad transistors, chips that drive the transistors, or bad solder
joints on the header pins at the daughter board on the CPU.

This *could* be due to bad ground connections. Follow the instructions
on John Robertson's site to perform the ground modifications. Even
though Hollywood Heat is a System 80B, look at the instructions under
System 3 - http://www.flippers.com/gottlieb_gro...s.html#System3.

This could also be due to bad grounds, bad connectors, or a bad
transistor. Do the ground mods first to see if the issue goes away.

One last thing is if it didn't come with a manual, I highly suggest
getting one for your game.

Good luck and enjoy!

You are in luck. Not only is the theme similar to Vice, but it is one
heck of a game. Very underrated 80's machine and a total keeper in my
collection. A good choice for your first machine.

Are you saying that when you hit one of them, it physically does not
drop, or it drops and immediately comes back up? I'd be concerned
with the solenoid burning if they are stuck up. You should check for
a ground issue or short. As far as the switches on those targets go,
check int he manual on the grid matrix to see if any of the other
switches in that row/column are working. My right side targets did
not register either and it was a broken wire far away (all the other
switches were out in that row).

Hi,

Start with the ground upgrades - I have a section on System 80C on this
page:

http://flippers.com/gottlieb_ground_cures.html

The drop targets staying reset on power on is a serious problem. First
off - the fuse should be blowing after a few seconds, so I highly
recommend that you unplug the game and check EVERY fuse against the fuse
charts in the game. I suspect a few will be quite wrong.

Once the fuses and grounds are dealt with then try turning the game on.
If the solenoid bank fires immediately turn the game off and find the
driver transistor for that coil and replace it. Also replace the 1N400X
diode on the coil as it may have failed.

Hope this helps!

From the reading I have done online with the grounding mods, it
appears that they were done to my machine. All the wires leading fromt
the lower unit at the transformer were all soldered together. None of
the GI lights work just the flashing / chasing lights. As far as the
drop targets it is the three in the hot shot area The are locked in
the up position and do not drop or score. Also, the bumper(?) to the
right of them does not score either. The rollovers in the same area do
score. I have a manual for the game coming.

Re: Help with Hollywood Heat

If the GI lights aren't working, I would suspect a blown fuse. As John
recommended, check all of the fuses installed versus what should be
installed.

Is the game booting up properly every time? In other words, the display
has zeros for all four players show up when you first turn the game on.
You then add a credit via a coin switch, press the start button, and
the game serves a ball.

Can you manually move the solenoid plunger from under the playfield?
Your coil may be fried and fused if you can't.

Yes the display comes up all zeros and the software version number. By
pressing the credit /start button adds credits and lets you play. As
far as the solenoid there is no movement at all when I have tried to
move it manually. It appears to be frozen.
I am still waiting on the manual so I can go through and check all
fuses.

I just wanted to say thank you to all you have responded. I really
appreciate the help. I love this group. I bought the pinball machines
for my fiance who loves pinball. Once I got them it reminded me of the
days at the arcade. We now have the Hollywood Heat and a Stellar Wars
(boards sent in, in really good shape other than some minor wear on
the playfield.) We also bought a Xmen arcade machine and a Rockola
jukebox. I would love to get a couple more pinball machines.

Re: Help with Hollywood Heat

As Chris pointed out, it sounds like the reset coil is possibly cooked
on that particular drop target bank. You can put an ohmmeter across the
coil lugs to see if it's cooked. The coil should read ~9 ohms, if it's
the correct coil (A-18102), and it's still good. If it's not good, you
can get the coils from Pinball Resource. However, before installing the
new coil, you will have to investigate why it locked on in the first
place. Start by checking the transistor on the driver board that
controls it.
