I'm sure this has been talked about before, but I'm interested in
downloading/purchasing any software out there which replaces the default
weather software in FSX. The default software (real world weather) is very
good, except for sudden changes in weather such as altidude winds and
visibility. In the real world, the visibility can be poor at near ground
level, but improve slowly with altitude. In FSX, the visibility suddenly
changes as one climbs out. It would be nice to see good horizontal
visibility at altitude, but poor visibility when viewed below with a gradual
change as one descends.
Is there any software that will give gradual changes in weather conditions
as opposed to immediate changes? In the real world, the ground can be quite
dark when viewed from altitude (daytime) when there is a large percentage of
cloud cover. In FSX, the ground is at the same brightness at the same time
of day irrespective of visibility and/or cloud conditions. Perhaps MS could
make that more realistic for future FS versions!

Without a question the best by far is ASX by HiFi Sim
You can buy just the ASX weather program or buy it with XGraphics bundled
which gives new cloud textures, road & airport textures, etc.
FWIW, I purchase ASX/Xgraphics and also purchased FEX because I feel the
clouds & water in FEX are superior to XG but the road & airport textures in
XG are best.

Hi Vic - would you know what the effect all this enhanced software has on
frame rates. At the moment, my max fps at the major airports can get as low
as 6 fps with Tokyo being particularly poor (3 to 4 fps at worst). No
problem once I'm out of the area when my FSX Deluxe returns to my set 20
fps.

Really depends on your system and the types and density of the clouds. Dark
thunderclouds are the worst but there are several "versions" of the clouds
which provide less of a frame hit. For general weather or normal cloud
coverage there's very little hit.
Trying to land at Tokyo in a thunderstorm WOULD be a show stopper though if
you only get 6 there w/o weather.
With my new system, I get down to 10-12 in those situations so it's not a
big deal.
Still, I can't imagine flying w/o ASX - makes all the difference in the
world.
I have Active Sky for FS9 and would also like to point out that when I
was doing a lot of benchmark tests I found certain clouds can have a
great impact on fps depending on your AA and AF settings on your
graphics card. So if you find fps dropping too low, check your
graphics settings on the card before lowering the texture quality of
the clouds.
Ibby
P.S. there is no way I would put up with 4-6 fps. I'm afraid I would
have FSX in the bin if I got that low.
The best part of flying, for me anyway, is taxiing, taking off and
landing which can be the most taxing areas of the sim.

Just to let you know what my system is:
Motherboard = AM2NF3-VSTA
Graphics Card = Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS
Processor = AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.44GHz
RAM = 2Gb
Operating System = Windows XP Home
DirectX = 9.0 c
If I upgraded, would I see a great improvement in frame rates, and if so,
how much would I need to spend to achieve frame rates 3 or 4 times what I'm
getting now?
FEX has a free weather engine in development right now...
