I've encountered a strange thing:
I try to run dos games on win xp (p3 800 640mb ram) using VDMS
(like monkey island, indiana jones, etc.).
The cmd window appears, but the game does not run (all i see is a
black screen). I've tried the same on a friend's laptop with winXp
home edition, and there it works like a charm.
any thoughts as to why this is happening?
thanks!

I don't know what causes it, but I have the same problem with XP myself.
Personally, I wish I'd never heard of XP.
You might try AbandonLoader at http://www.angelfire.com/realm/zeroone.
It works in conjunction with VDMS and creates an environment somehow
allowing your games to run, and also creates a shortcut.
I've had success with it on a number of old games.

VDMSound is not for running games on XP or whatever, it's ONLY for getting
sound out of them.
Getting a game started under XP involves many different things, starting
from the compatibility mode you chose for the game's executable and ending
with the correct configuration of your devices (for exemple VESA DOS
compliancy and so on).
Better try out a DOS emulator or Virtual Machine like DOSbox, BOCHS, VMWare,
Microsoft's VirtualPC and so on.

hiya...
thanks for your quick reply!
I know about dos emulators, and about configuring compitability on the
..exe properties. But i don't get how is it possible, that using the
same configurations and software, on one system it works, and on
another it doesn't work. All i was asking was if somebody knew of a
possible reason to why this is happening and maybe know a solution...
i'm reluctant to use dos emulation. don't even know why really...
i'd rather keep using VDMS and a windows cdm window.

As you move further away from good-old MS-DOS/PC-DOS, the
support for legacy games decreases, until some games will NOT run under
the OS.
Best solution is to hang onto that legacy PC-box and convert it
into a DOS-Gaming box for unsupported/abandoned games.
IMHO...

are you sure you both have the same hardware configuration?
excessive speed (strong cpu), for example, might be one possible cause.
another one might as well be the compatibility or less of the sound
system/board.
many games just don't run if the soundcard is not 100% sb compatible or do
run sooooo slow that it seems thjey are almost sill (cocktel vision's games
come to my mind).

Microsoft should make some virtual machine program for all the old stuff.
I have to agree with you.... it's best to get an old PC to use as a legacy
box (or use a seperate hard drive, though that is not without it's little
quirks, as well). I have an extra hard drive, myself just for such a
purpose.

They don't need to make one; they bought one from Connectix. Its not
perfect, because it wasn't designed to run old games, but to provide
backwards compatibility with old Windows OSes... but a lot of old titles
from DOS to Win98 still run very well.

well, i don't have a very strong cpu - p3 800. and i'm using sb live!
value, so i think it's 100% compatible...
actually, the laptop is p4, i'm not sure about the mhz, but it's
probably above 1Ghrz, and is using an onboard sound card, which i'm
pretty sure isn't an original creative sound card, so it might not be
100% sb compatible. and yet, all the games i've tried on the laptop
using VDMS works, and the same ones on't work on my pc. i thought it
might be that the hardware drivers on the laptop are more attuned to
the devices, and so they work in better harmony with each other, and
that might be the cause. but that means that there is no solution to
my problem, and that's just too damn depressing... so i conveniently
dropped that theory...
i don't have an older machine i could convert into a gaming station,
and i'm looking for a cheap solution to this poblem...
