Heroes cant get past level 5 with creeps. To hit level 6 you have to
fight the enemy. I'm assuming you're playing Frozen Throne, since you
didnt specify. In ROC, you can creep to level 10 if there are enough
creeps on the map.

Use hotkeys and control groups. F1, F2, and F3 on your keyboard will
select your first, second, and third hero. Then learn the hotkeys for
their spells, and you can easily select a hero, manuver, and cast spells.
Also, use Ctrl-number to put them all in a single control group, selected
by hitting that number, and you can tab thru them to use their skills.
Otherwise, read your game manual where it explains all of this as well.
In Frozen Throne its also possible to remap the hotkeys to your own
preferences, altho I've yet to bother myself.
