Many times, when I switch from driver to skyline shooter, the game
freezes up on me for several seconds. Is that because I don't have
enough RAM (only 512MB) or is it a limitation of my video card (a 9800
Pro), or something else?

Never seen that one Tuber, but I think you're on the right track with
it being a memory problem. I played UT2004 for a good year with only
512 and it hitched fairly frequently. Upgrading to 1 GB smoothed it
right out.
Where ya been? Ain't seen you online lately.

Unfortunately I bought my system when RDRAM seemed like the next
great thing. Now that Rambus is basically dead, expanding to 1 GB is
pretty expensive.

I changed my playing name to pinprick, and more recently to
ultra_scully. Not exactly sure why.

Rambus died over five years ago. Sounds like you're due for an
upgrade.

Ouch - I'm remember looking into upgrading some Dell machines at work
which had Rambus ram. You could try and look for some 2nd hand or else
you could replace you motherboard - with a little luck a 100$ should
bring both some ram and a replacement motherboard.
Kind regards
Bruno
PS. A possible free fix could be cleaning up Windows instead. Chances
are a lot of stuff is being loaded in the background which you don't
need and maybe don't even know about. Try googling for Windows clean
services and so on.

Tweakxp.com used to be a really good place to start.
