View Full Version : POTC - Tourney question & Gauntlet points
So, I've been playing a route POTC on both tourney mode and regular
mode for a few months now and until this week I was constantly falling
short on getting the Four Winds multiball. I've made it there four
times now in the last five days in part, I believe, on a new strategy
I've used to play. So I stop by last night and and topped my best two
current tourney scores (no extra balls awarded, no specials awarded)
of 108 & 105 million with a whopping 330 million which is 20 million
more than my own high score on the machine from a regular game where
the free balls help boost the total!
However, since it's a tourney game I am not awarded the Grand Champion
slot nor did I score any gauntlet points (btw - I've never made
gauntlet points in non-tourney game either)!
Do I have to be playing standard game to receive gauntlet points?
I did complete the Four Winds and pretty soon I had knocked out all
the flashing arrows at least once, but I believe probably two times,
and thereafter damn near every shot was 4 million points! What am I
missing here. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about gauntlet points during tourney mode, but...
Are you sure you completed 4 winds? It's 32 shots. First you have to
make the flashing yellow monkey shot which then lights all of the 7
shots on playfield. Complete the 7 then repeat 3 more times with only
the monkey shot changing each time.
Sounds like you at least came close. Nice.

Well then it sounds like I did not complete the 4W multiball - damn
it! LOL! I hit that damn monkey immediately after the 4W multiball
started, then knocked out all the lit/flashing arrows, knocked the
monkey between the eyes again, then started in on the arrows once more
and this may have been where the final ball drained (if someone knows
the point values it would help, each 4W shot was worth 4million) if
not then I was on the third set of arrows when it drained.
So Gauntlet points come after completing the 32 shots? And how are
those gauntlet points earned/awarded, exactly?

I haven't scored any gauntlet points yet, but I believe the MO is to
shoot the tortuga ramp to select a captain. Selecting a captain lights
one shot on the playfield to collect that captain and score one
gauntlet point. Back up the ramp to select another captain and so on.
Not sure about jackpot points. 4 winds does remember where you left
off though, so if you complete half of the shots and then complete the
compass again, you will not have to make all 32 shots again. Doesn't
need to be done on the same ball either. I've done this once. Koz
posted a great tip recently to have at least 2 balls in play when
starting 4 winds with one cradled on the left flipper, so you can nail
the monkey shot quickly and keep the ballsaver going for the other
shots. Haven't tried it yet but it sounds like a good idea. The monkey
shot can waste a lot of time and ballsaver.
You're close. Won't be long.

Good score, good score!

Sorry, but you didn't complete Four Winds. It sounds like you got to
the third level of Four Winds. In the first level, one shot lights
(the monkey) then all 7 shots light up for a max of 2 million (depends
on how fast you shot the monkey). In the second level, one shot
lights (left lane?) then all 7 shots light up for a max of 3 million.
In the third level (which you describe) one shot lights then all 7
light up for a max of 4 million. Then, you'll never guess what the
fourth level is like -- 5 million!
If you can get through all 32 shots in this multiball -- sheesh, a 32-
shot multiball? -- only then will Gauntlet begin, and it begins
immediately. I'm not completely sure, but only one shot should be lit
at a time during Gauntlet.
Phish makes a good comment about Four Winds, that it will pick up
where you left off. This is not much consolation for the no-extra-
ball version of play, where it would be pretty darn difficult to get
all the way back around to Four Winds twice in a game.
I'd give you more info about Gauntlet, but I don't know much about
it. I've only played it once, during the Expo qualifying, and I was a
little busy batting the balls around ;) Unfortunately there are still
no POTC games within easy distance of me.
Hope this helps, and nice job getting 330m. Time to start going to
tournaments...

Thank you for the info! The scoring is exactly what! I needed to know!
Now I'll have an idea of where I'm at during 4W MB!
Living in So Cal makes it tough for me to get to tournaments but I
keep hoping one will come here or near here someday!

Time to start drivin'! You've got a tournament every summer in San
Jose (CA Extreme) and what seems to be an increasing number of
tournaments in Las Vegas (ASI, others?) ... get in the car! You'll
have a good time.

Thank you for the encouragement - I think! I'd like to get my feet wet
locally first but I have tried to make Ca Extreme both of the last two
years but couldn't get it into my schedule. I'll try again this
summer.

Go to the Belsito Fest tourny in March. I need to trek down to Mira
Mesa Bowl one of these years and check out the potc.

It's already on my calendar - got my first reminder today (LOL). I am
so looking forward to it regardless of my performance it should be fun
actually playing against people you can meet rather than just leaving
your score on the machine.
