Has anyone had any luck with a Radeon VE running Quake in OpenGL? I've
tried all the brightness and intensity controls and tweaks that i can
find and it still is too dark to be playable.

Any suggestions?

are these some of the settings you played with?

gl_modulate "4" <enter>
vid_gamma ".7" <enter> (that is "point 7")
intensity "2" <enter>
vid_restart <enter>

gl_modulate - higher is brighter
vid_gamma - lower is brighter (and that is a decimal 7)
intensity - higher is brighter
vid_restart - must do this everytime you change something for the changes to
take effect.

I tried them, and while they certainly make it better, it's very red.
I'll keep playing around with them, but was hoping someone with one of
these cards had come up with something. I think it's time for a new
card. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

John

I don't mean to sound condescending, but did you turn the brightness on your
monitor up?

It's all single player, when i have some time, but I would like to
improve the quality of the video and I'd like to be able to play Doom3
and HL2 when they come out.

I now have an Athlon 1.6 with 256MB PC2100 RAM which I'm told will be
"chewed up and spit out" by these new games. So a new MB might be in
order as well. So i guess I'm serious to the extent that I'd pay $2-300
for the video card or more if I have to. But I'd also like to be able
to play these older games as well.

Thanks for the responses, BTW.

I did. Doesn't seem to help much, but thanks for the suggestion.

sorry, I have been away for a couple of days ;o(

well for $200-$300 you could get a good card. around $200 you could get an
nvidia 5700 ultra or an ati 9600xt, or for just a couple of dollars more you
could get an nvidia 5900SE which is almost exactly the same as the 5900,
just for a lot less. Just stay away from ati's SE cards, as they are
severely crippled. For closer to $300 you could get an nvidia 5900 or an
ati 9800. ati does a better job in halflife 2 right now, but it looks like
nvidia is doing a much better job in doom3. So just get whatever you would
feel comfortable with. They will all get the job done..

and yes, you will also need a new motherboard/cpu combo with more memory to
play them well. Especially the memory. Your computer isn't all that slow
yet, but the 256mb of memory is already starting to limit some games.
