the fuhquake looks like it has bots and a bunch of added maps and
whatnot, as well as, perhaps, a "refresher" tutorial so I can
customize the look like I did in the past, since I can't remember what
I did 7 years ago with my "almighty" autoexec.cfg file?

yes, I used to play quake (and q2 and q3) a ton, and i lost
everything, haven't even considered firing it up in ages, and now i'm
gonna be stuck in a big metal box in a desert with nothing but a power
cable and a laptop, for a year, so I'ma refresh my love for the entire
quake world by packing my HDD with every damn map I can find for
quake, q2 and q3, and running against the bots, playing single player,
etc

is there a doggone "hey dummy, this is how you do this, REMEMBER?"
type FAQ for the quakes?

damn I have some refreshing to do...

also, is equake basically just fuhquake with a bunch of added stuff? so if
i got equake, i'd get fuhquake, plus a whole lot more?

I just need to have basic quake 1.08 installed, right? Other than paying
planetquake a fee to download something that should be free (since I own
Quake1), where can I get 1.08?

thanks a bunch.

eQuake is a package comprising FuhQuake and a variety of other files and
useful utilities.

Yup.

You don't need any version of the original Quake application installed to
use FuhQuake. You do need the ID1 folder with pak0.pak and pak1.pak of
course to have all the standard levels. (pak0.pak is the free downloadable
demo/shareware version that just includes episode 1, and is included in
eQuake, pak1.pak is what you get when you buy the game.)

I think eQuake includes SOME levels from pak1.pak; initially it included the
main multiplayer levels (DM2/4/6) and a handful of single-player levels from
episodes 2-4 that show up commonly on online servers, which would be
playable even in the absence of pak1.pak, but there were, unsurprisingly,
some copyright concerns so I'm not sure if they're still in the package (or
maybe they still are and they're just not advertising it as much).

The full pak1.pak is the only file you need to play the entire Quake game
that's not included in eQuake; you need to get it from your Quake CD (or a
friend), and it can replace the pak1.pak that comes with eQuake. You can
also order a downloadable version from the id site, but it's pretty shocking
that they charge *$25* for a 7 year old game, particularly when they're not
even including the CD, booklet, etc. (They'd probably make more money
charging $5 instead; I'd probably have paid that just to download it faster,
rather than hooking up my old Mac to transfer it over from...)

Oh, for a selection of some of the best maps out there, try
http://www.planetquake.com/peek/ or http://www.planetquake.com/gonzo/

Plus I think for variety you should bring Unreal Tournament (plus many added
maps), UT2003, Starcraft Broodwar, and other games.
